Fleet operators managing trucks, tractors and trailers must track annual safety requirements. Emissions testing is a separate requirement that applies only to qualifying heavy-duty diesel commercial motor vehicles.
DriveON replaced the paper-based Motor Vehicle Inspection Station (MVIS) system. MVIS ended March 31, 2025, and DriveON became the mandatory digital inspection program effective April 1, 2025. Authorized safety and emissions inspections for commercial vehicles are recorded digitally through DriveON.

Most trucks and trailers with a total gross weight, registered gross weight (RGW), or gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 4,500 kg require an annual safety inspection. An annual or semi-annual inspection can be used as a Safety Standards Certificate for 36 days after the date of inspection. Trailers may require safety inspections; they do not receive a heavy-duty diesel emissions test on their own.
An emissions test is required for heavy-duty diesel commercial motor vehicles with an RGW over 4,500 kg in these situations:
A DriveON emissions inspection includes a pre-test check and opacity testing. Eligible vehicles also receive an OBD system check according to model-year and GVWR requirements in the current DriveON emissions directive.
A vehicle emissions report indicating a pass is generally used for 12 months from the inspection date.
DriveON inspection centres perform emissions inspections under Directive Schedule 1 and applicable safety inspections under Directive Schedule 2. Fleet managers do not choose the schedule; they plan appointments so the correct inspection type is requested for each unit.
